Sheridan's Charge at Winchester

Sheridan's Charge at Winchester

Union General Grant put Philip Sheridan in charge of the Army of the Shenandoah to dispose of the Confederate Army under General Early. Sheridan's predawn attack near Winchester, on September 19, 1864, met with moderate success. After eight hours of seesaw fighting, there was a short lull. This print shows when at 4:30 p.m., all three Union corps, led by cavalry, attacked along the entire Confederate line. Early's troops fled in disarray.
